Don’t Take The Torah Literally

Saw an interesting programme on SHALOM TV yesterday (Yom Kippur). An interview with Rabbi Eugene B. Borowitz titled Jewish Tradition’s Understanding of God L’Chayim with Mark S. Golub.

A most fascinating program!

Mr. Golub asked the Rabbi: Does God Exist?

And the Rabbi immediately said Yes.

Then Golub said: Is God a person?

And the Rabbi said: Well …”God isn’t a person. God doesn’t have fingers and require a manicure.”

He said at the time of its man-made creation inadequate language was all we had to describe the Torah God. Today Physics and the Intellect would be a more “modern (notion)” way to do this.

Rabbi Borowitz said not to take the Torah literally. That it is “a series of symbolic images”. If you want to understand the Torah,”get to know how to read poetry.” The Torah is a metaphor between God and man.

The Rabbi said, “We are not talking about something small here!”

Agreed dear Rabbi.

But why not use the more “modern notion” learned through Physics and the Intellect and Reason and observation of the creation (the work of Nature’s God) and be satisfied with that reality; leaderless, except for the Author of our Souls, and without clerics to lead us astray.

We only need the heavens in their vast array to lead us to the eternal and infinite truth (veritas).

Novus Ordo Seclorum!!!
